"One of the last of its kind," Max Doilney says wistfully of The Corner Store Pub and Grill. Not that the local icon is fading away. After 50 years at the base of Park City Mountain, The Corner Store draws crowds like a Park City magnet for excellent food, good music and an authentic mountain atmosphere. A large 1960s-era Park City wall photo transports diners to simpler times, while a sled built from the old ski jump on Ecker Hill adds to the homey feel Max cultivates. The original Corner Store sign, hung by his parents when they opened the place in 1974, is displayed as a cherished throwback.
The Corner Store remains a favorite hangout for Max and co-owner Jeff Jacobs, Max's partner in running the business since 2004. "In the summer, there's no more peaceful place to have lunch than our patio," Max says. "In winter, when skiing is a Park City way of life, we embrace 70's ski culture with a vibrant Après Ski experience."
Off work, "Jeff is teaching his oldest to drive and tries to keep up with his younger one," Max smiles. My 6- and 10-year-old run the show at our house."
Serving on the Park City Council for four years as his father had in the 80s, Max was on the Resiliency Task Force during COVID, where he saw Park City businesses unite in mutual support and witnessed "the challenges for small businesses that remain today."
The good times and warm memories the Corner Store experience creates have helped shape Park City's character for decades. Max wants all Parkites to contribute to keeping the spirit alive.
"It is up to all of us to ensure Park City's unique charm and resilience," he believes. "One way is to support the many local businesses deeply rooted here."
