Objective 4 | Build Economic Resilience
Tourism plays a central role in the local economy, supporting jobs, businesses, and public services. At the same time, recent global challenges such as climate change and pandemics have underscored how quickly conditions can shift. This objective focuses on strengthening long term stability so the community is better prepared to adapt, respond, and thrive in the face of uncertainty.

Objective 4.1 Launch Information Campaign Related to the Threat of Climate Change on Economic Stability
Back to Top of ListThis initiative will develop communications tools and advocacy priorities to share information on the risks climate change poses and what can be done to mitigate those risks.
Project Progress

Understanding how climate change affects our local economy is an important part of building long-term resilience. The Summit County Health Department's climate and public health speaker series explores how wildfire smoke, extreme heat, and air quality affect community wellbeing. That said, a more direct campaign focused on climate's economic impact is still in development.
Objective 4.2 Develop Community Resilience Plans
Back to Top of ListThese plans should be developed by a cross section of area stakeholders with an eye on strategies and initiatives that will keep people, the economy, and the environment healthy when confronted by unanticipated events.
Project Progress

Existing hazard mitigation plans address wildfire, flooding, and extreme weather, and Park City Fire District and Park City Municipal are both active in wildfire risk mitigation. The Summit County Health Department recently completed a Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan, which calls for supporting the resilience of local food systems. Formal resilience planning is still developing, but the building blocks are coming together.
Objective 4.3 Create a County-Wide Economic Diversification Plan
Back to Top of ListTo protect against potential travel industry shocks, a county-wide diversification plan will be created to look at growing other industries in Summit County. This plan will perform an in-depth SWOT analysis to understand the avenues for diversification readily available, and what resources exist to help support this initiative.
Project Progress

Tourism product development work is actively expanding into arts, culinary, wellness, and outdoor events to broaden the range of reasons people visit across all four seasons. A more formalized county-wide diversification plan is still in progress.
Objective 4.4 Expand Green Business Program
Back to Top of ListThe Recycle Utah Green Business Program was initiated in 2016, and has grown into a collaboration between Recycle Utah, PCCVB, Summit County, and Park City. This initiative will expand this program to address energy, water, materials, transportation, and a thriving equitable community as it relates to local businesses. Additionally, the program will be enhanced with educational resources, marketing incentives, lunch & learns, and opportunities for participating businesses to learn from each other.
Project Progress

The Green Business Program has successfully been expanded and relaunched under the leadership of Summit County. The program features a new website at parkcitygreen.org to give local businesses a practical framework for reducing their footprint, conserving resources, and supporting the people and places that make Park City special. The program continues to grow as more Summit County businesses sign on and put those values into practice.
Objective 4.5 Shape Visitation to Respect a Traditional Respite Period for the Community in Park City
Back to Top of ListThrough the survey implemented in the Winter 2022, residents and businesses alike voiced a need for respite following the busy winter season. To honor this, the PCCVB understands mid-April to late-May will serve as this respite. During this period, the PCCVB and its partners will work to attract moderate, sustainable visitation at 40%-60% capacity. This period will focus on attracting corporate meetings and art aficionados to support the visitor economy while reducing demand on some community spaces.

Even the most beloved places need a breather. We focus group sales on shoulder season windows, avoid specific spring marketing in May, and work with media partners to influence booking patterns. The goal is to spread visitation in ways that give the community room to breathe while keeping the local economy healthy.
